These scene was driven by a few ideas an inspirations feeding into each other. Firstly, I was becoming more and more curious about using VFX in environments. Seeing the incredible Lantern scene in Tangled drove me to start trying to recreate the effects in UDK, and a desire to test myself in rapid asset production changed a small experiment into a small environment.
What I am most proud of here is the fairly complex shader that the lanterns use, created in UDK's material editor. It's main functions are to allow easy pattern and colour variation between lanterns, blend different lanterns into one unified colour scheme at a distance, and realistically recreate the surface of a paper lantern.
